July is all about independence! Independence plays a vital role in maintaining a high quality of life, no matter your age, ability, or role as a caregiver. The ability to make your own choices, contribute to your community, and manage your daily routine can boost self-esteem, improve mental and physical health, and foster a sense of purpose. Whether you’re an older adult wanting to stay active, a person with a disability navigating daily life, or a caregiver supporting a loved one, finding ways to promote and protect independence is essential to overall well-being.

Here are some tips to maintain your independence this month and all year long:

Stay Active
  • Engage in regular physical activity to maintain strength, balance, flexibility, and mental well-being.
  • LifeStream’s Wellness Programs offer a range of classes that promote movement, healthy eating, balance, and more. See if there’s a class that fits your needs here.
Accept Help and Assistance
  • Maintaining your independence doesn’t mean you have to do everything on your own—ask for help when you need it. Accepting help allows us to avoid burnout and from unnecessarily straining ourselves too much on certain tasks.
  • Utilize assistive devices to prevent injury, such as walkers, canes, or grab bars.
Foster social connections
  • Maintaining social connections can prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  • Volunteering a great way to stay connected and get involved in your community. LifeStream’s Volunteer Services always have many opportunities to get involved—find available opportunities here.
Practice self-care
  • Managing your stress, sleep, and nutrition is essential for long-term independence.
  • Make time for yourself each week to do something that brings you joy.
Build a support network
  • Surround yourself with friends, family, or groups who understand your needs and respect your independence.
  • Seek out local support groups to connect with folks who may be in a similar situation. LifeStream’s STEP In Caregiver Programs offer Monthly Caregiver Gatherings intended for caregivers only—if you’re a caregiver in search of support, find your local resources here.
Establish boundaries
  • Healthy boundaries allow your support system to understand how they can be there for you without compromising your independence.
Stimulate your brain regularly
  • Engaging in activities like reading, puzzles, and memory games stimulate your brain to improve cognitive function and ability.

These are just a few ways you can work to maintain your independence. LifeStream’s is here to provide the right information, resources, and support for improving quality of life and maintaining independence for older adults, those with disabilities, and caregivers—this month, and every month.
