In celebration of Older Americans Month, we are recognizing the contributions made by older adults in our communities. We are sharing the nominations submitted for the LifeStream Golden Hoosier Award, which recognizes outstanding volunteerism by older adults. Stay tuned for an announcement on the winners of this award in the coming weeks.
Josette (Jodi) Johnson
Jodi retired from teaching in the public schools after 32 years of services and from teaching at Ivy Tech after 34 years of service.
For the last 25 years, Jodi has volunteered at the Cambridge City Library. Jodi was involved as one of the board of directors for 16 years and, after her appointment to the board ended, she began volunteering in the library 2 days a week working at the desk and shelving books. Her involvement changed again during the pandemic with the reduced hours of operation. She now assists with files and fills in when employees have vacations. As the library hours of operation return to normal, she hopes to find herself shelving books and working at the desk more frequently.
Since 2013, Jodi has been the Vice President of Cambridge City Neighborhood Crime Watch. With her help, the Crime Watch prepares meals for Brianna’s Home at the River Church in Cambridge City. Brianna’s hope is a community-based, faith-based substance abuse recovery group. As part of a great accomplishment, she worked with the Neighborhood Crime watch group to raise $30,000.00 to purchase a police dog for a member of their police department.
She drives for the Western Wayne Senior Center and delivers Meals on Wheels. She crochets baby blankets for both Western Wayne Senior Center fundraising and Birthright, a non-profit charitable organization that provides love and support to women facing unplanned pregnancies. She does her church bulletins and helps with funeral dinners for her church. In her spare time, she has gone to people’s homes to help with computer issues.
Jodi is the true meaning of integrity. Her nominators also shared that Jodi is the most giving and caring person that they are happy to call friend.
